Surprise Web site offers multi-lingual translation
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Colorful flags highlight a new feature on the city's popular web site: an instant translation of Web pages into any of several languages.
"It is important for us to recognize that many people coming into our community may be fluent in more than one language," said City Manager Randy Oliver of the new service on www.surpriseaz.com. "We want to be open to them and to people around the world who have an interest in Surprise."
"It makes sense for our world wide Web presence to be available to people using other languages," said Communications Director Ken Lynch. "It says we are responsive and leading the way in providing innovative service."
Recent Web statistics show that people from more than 20 countries have visited the Surprise Web site in the past three months.
Flags posted on the site denote French, German, Italian, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese. By clicking on the flags, viewers will see the page translated into the language of the country chosen.
The languages represent the primary tongue in seven of the world's top 10 economies. The list includes Spanish, the primary language of 18 Central and South American countries and the most common non-English language in the southwestern United States.
"In terms of our economy, it is important we be seen as a city that is aware of the global nature of the economy, and that we are prepared to do business with entities around the world," said Economic Development Director John Hagen.
The translation service is one of many new services planned for the site. In September, new ways for residents to get fast customer service and information about their neighborhoods will be unveiled, and a site redesign is set for October.
