Surprise Today

The Surprise Police Department's new Community Action Team has arrested a man on robbery charges.

On Friday, Surprise officers responded to the Wal-Mart at 13370 West Bell Road after two loss prevention officers there were assaulted. The prevention personnel were attempting to detain a shoplifter, later identified as 21-year-old Brandon Worrel of Glendale as he left the store, police said.

Worrel struck one of them in the face and head butted the second before fleeing in a stolen vehicle. Both suffered minor injuries. Neither required treatment.

Officers of the Department's newly formed Community Action Team later located the vehicle and Worrel at a nearby apartment complex. Worrel again attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended after a brief struggle with officers, police said.

Worrel suffered minor injuries as a result. He was transported to, treated and released from Del E. Webb hospital before being booked into the 4th Avenue Jail on charges including robbery, theft of means of transportation, resisting arrest, and possession of burglary tools, police said

. None of the officers involved were injured.
