Pro bowlers return to SCW in September

Daily News-Sun

Pro bowling returns to Sun City West next month.

The Pain Centers of Arizona Open will be played Sept. 12 through Sept. 14 in R.H. Johnson Lanes, 19883 R.H. Johnson Blvd.

Organizers scheduled this year's event later in the year to accommodate a larger fan following inside the facility. Last year's tournament drew 3,000 fans over three days and was completed on July 16.

"More residents will be back in September and more of them will have a chance to come out and watch the tournament this year," said Mel Shirey, tournament director.

The Sun City West stop has become a popular event on the West Region tour because of the large fan base which turns out, said David Leverage, a PBA Tour player and tournament director.

"It's depressing for the bowlers to walk in on the day of the finals and find eight or nine people inside the bowling center. The fans in Sun City West have always turned out in big numbers and the bowlers really appreciate that."

The large turnout also will attract some of the top bowlers in the West to the third annual tournament.

The 118-player field will include Cave Creek's Michael Haugen, who won the 2008 H&R Block Tournament of Champions last season on the Denny's PBA Tour; 2006 champion Mike DeVaney, a top tour player; Dennis Horan Jr., the 2007 champion; Andrew Cain, last year's runner-up who earned a berth on the upcoming PBA Tour; and Shannon Pluhowsky, a winner on the PBA Women's Tour.

Two tournament spots will be made available to non-PBA Tour members, including at least one bowler from the Sun Cities.

The first Win-a-Spot tournament will be played Aug. 31 in R.H. Johnson Lanes and is open to any non-PBA Tour member.

The second Win-a-Spot tournament will be played Sept. 7 in R.H. Johnson Lanes and will be open to Sun City West and Sun City bowlers.

First place in each tournament will be a berth alongside the pros in the regular tournament.

Bowlers will have another chance to bowl with the pros at one of the two pro-am events, scheduled at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 12 and 8 p.m. on Sept. 13.

The regular tournament finals are scheduled for Sunday.
