D’backs’ rally falls short in 9th

Daily News-Sun

DENVER - After giving up two runs in a first-inning rally fueled by two walks, Doug Davis vented behind the Diamondbacks dugout at Coors Field Wednesday.

It worked for Davis, who settled in, and the Diamondbacks overcame a three-run deficit to tie the game at 4-4.

But Colorado's Brad Hawpe and Brian Fuentes settled things in the Rockies' 6-5 victory.

Hawpe hit a two-run home run off Jon Rauch to break the tie in the eighth, and Fuentes held off another comeback in the ninth.

After Augie Ojeda walked and Chris Burke singled with one out in the ninth, Stephen Drew lined an RBI single to right that sent Burke to third.

With the infield in, Chris Young struck out on a 2-2 fastball. Fuentes intentionally walked Conor Jackson to bring up Adam Dunn, who worked the count full before grounding out to shortstop.
